Vienna (OTS) – The 40th edition of the ImPulsTanz Festival will once once more make Vienna the capital of culture and dance until August 6th. Yesterday, Friday, the anniversary was celebrated in the arcade courtyard in the town hall. Vienna’s mayor and “landlord” Michael Ludwig presented the long-time artistic director Karl Regensburger as a surprise with the golden town hall man.

Mayor Ludwig thus honored the achievements of Regensburg over the past 40 years. For Ludwig, the ImPulsTanz Festival has been an integral part of the city since the foundation stone was laid in 1984. “Thanks to numerous great events like this one, Vienna has positioned and distinguished itself as a leading cultural metropolis,” said Ludwig. The ImpulsTanz Festival also contributes to the high quality of life in the city and is a key factor in Vienna being regularly voted the most livable city in the world in international rankings.

According to Ludwig, the interest in the performances and workshops is unbroken. “Last year, 137,700 dance enthusiasts visited the festival – this enormous number will probably be exceeded in the course of this year’s anniversary edition”. All of this, Ludwig continued, would be the achievements and merits of Karl Regensburger and his comrade-in-arms Ismael Ivo, who died in 2021. “I would like to congratulate you for everything you have done for the cultural offerings of this city,” said Ludwig. Director Karl Regensburger thanked for the award.

40 years ImPulsTanz Festival

In the early 1980s, Karl Regensburger began working at the then Tanzforum Wien. After a chance encounter with the Brazilian dancer Ismael Ivo, he brought him to the Tanzforum Wien as a guest teacher. Together they founded the International Dance Weeks Vienna in 1984. In 1988 the event was renamed the “ImPulsTanz Festival”.

Today the festival stands for performances, workshops and research projects. With an annual program of around 50 productions, which ImPulsTanz shows in the most important venues in the city, and more than 200 workshops where dance can be experienced in all its facets, ImPulsTanz is now one of the most important festivals for contemporary dance and performance worldwide.
