ANNEMASSE, France (AP) — Spanish cyclist Antonio Pedrero was evacuated by ambulance following a multiple accident that forced the 14th stage of the Tour de France to be briefly suspended shortly following it started on Saturday.
Louis Meintjes, 13th overall, retired with a possible broken clavicle. Colombian Esteban Chaves, from the EF Education Easypost team, also withdrew. Frenchman Romain Bardet and James Shaw joined the downhill retirement list shortly following the accident.
Dozens of cyclists crashed on a curvy, slippery road in Annemasse and several received treatment. Adrien Petit, Meinties’s Intermarche-Circus-Wanty teammate, got back on the bike with his right leg bandaged.
The organizers decided to stop the competition for 15 minutes. Stage 14 is a tough 152km route with five ascents in the Alps.
Neither of the two leaders were involved in the crash. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard leads two-time winner Tadej Pogacar by nine seconds.
