A fatal hiking accident occurred near the state border near Unken. Recreational athletes discovered the man who died in a creek bed.
On Friday followingnoon, a group of canyoning athletes found a male corpse in the Fischbach in the border area between Bavaria and Salzburg in the Ruhpolding municipality. The investigations by the Ruhpolding police station and the Alpine task force that was called in revealed that the dead person was an 82-year-old hiker from the Altötting district, who apparently alone was involved and went off the path and then fell through the steep forest area into the stream bed. The man’s body had to be recovered by a police helicopter.
The canyoning group was on a hike in the Fischbach coming from the Heutal (Unken) in the direction of Ruhpolding. The guide of the group came across a dead person in the creek bed. Since there was no mobile phone network available in this area, the guide had to continue and was only able to inform the Ruhpolding police station at the end of the stream. A patrol by the Ruhpolding police was able to locate the fatally injured man from the northern district of Altötting at the scene.
The 82-year-old is obviously a hiker who was probably on his way from Ruhpolding towards the dust fall or on the way back from it and, for reasons that have not yet been clarified, fell over steep forest terrain to the creek bed. Due to the steep terrain in the area of the location, a terrestrial rescue might not be carried out. Two mountain guides from the Grassau Alpine task force and the Edelweiß police helicopter were requested for further support.
The alpine officials recorded the accident on site and recovered the body. Further investigations into the cause of the accident are being conducted in cooperation with the public prosecutor’s office in Traunstein. The investigators are assuming the accident was tragic, as there is no evidence of third-party involvement.
