O Twitter announced a new setting that will help handle the sensitive amount of spam which is sent in Direct messages (Direct Messagesor DMs) on the social network. You can now enable an option for messages sent by verified accounts that you don’t follow to be routed to a message requests tab and not your main inbox.
The new setting, according to the social network, will become available today and will be activated by default in the case of users who chose to have their DMs open to everyone, although it is possible to deactivate it. If you choose to keep it active, only messages sent by accounts that the user follows can be checked in the main inbox.

Starting July 14th, we are adding a new messaging setting that should help reduce the number of spam messages in DMs. With the new setting turned on, messages from users you follow will land in your primary inbox, and messages from verified users you don’t follow will land in your requests box. Users who previously had their permissions set to allow requests from everyone will be migrated to this new setting, but will be able to opt out at any time. Currently, you can only choose to receive messages from accounts you follow, from anyone, or from any verified user. With the change in the verification system, however, Twitter Blue subscribers also started to fit into this last group, deviating a little from the initial purpose of the configuration.
That is, if before, when allowing verified users to get in touch, users were thinking of famous and important people, now verified users can be anyone (who subscribes to Blue). Even if Elon Muskex-CEOChief executive officeror executive director.”>1 mentioned a decrease in spam spread on Twitter, this very measure of the network is proof that this is still a problem.
Contrary to what the Twitter post says, the novelty should not — at least not directly — reduce the number of spam messages sent, but only allow the redirection of such content. We can also see that the function of allowing verified DMs has lost its meaning, in that it is causing more nuisance than being useful.
Journalists who want to get in touch with someone, for example, not only were unable to do so because they lost verification, but even if they are Twitter Blue subscribers, their messages will be displayed alongside others in the requests tab. This is, therefore, another clear negative effect of the change in the verification system.
