The committee of representatives of the 2017-2023 generation of medical interns revealed today that the Yucatan Health Secretariat (SSY) has promised to eliminate the Tixcacaltuyub plaza and to seek an improvement in the scholarships that doctors receive for the period 2023- 2024, following the students met in the morning with state government authorities.

In an interview, Juan Carlos Sosa, a student leader, pointed out that in response to the protest led yesterday by the interns during the position selection ceremony, the SSY today established a dialogue table with the members of the committee to receive their request and give follow-up on their demands for security and economic support.

“The representatives Raúl Moguel, Sol Garma, Cristian Saenz -counselor of the Faculty of Medicine- and myself met with Saúl de los Santos Briones, director of Planning and Development, who listened to our requests and promised to generate changes from the state administration” .

Sosa confirmed that the official promised to eliminate the “unsafe” position of Tixcacaltuyub from the selection process, as well as to establish a dialogue channel through the committee to give immediate and timely follow-up to the complaints that the interns had during the period 2023- 2024.

“The SSY will guarantee the safety of the classmates: in the event of any case of abuse of authority or insecurity, the institution will relocate the interns without this affecting them academically. There will also be a direct communication mechanism with the secretariat, so that when a conflict arises, the person affected has immediate official support.”

Regarding the scholarships received by the interns, Sosa pointed out that the director of Planning and Development mentioned to them that the increase in the amounts they currently receive -1,600 pesos per month- is outside the direct jurisdiction of the state administration; It is the responsibility of the Federation. However, as a government they would seek to apply political pressure for an improvement or generate, locally, a state scholarship that might complement what the interns currently receive.

Juan Calos Sosa also highlighted the inability of the SSY to directly modify the “long” hours of social service that the interns must cover -24 hours, 6 days a week-: “Santos Briones pointed out that although it seems to him an outdated and excessive scheme , the legislation that supports it comes from the Federal level, so the state secretary cannot change it either.

Interns will select places in a timely manner

The representative of the generational committee confirmed that following the meeting with the SSY, the students will continue the process of choosing places as agreed yesterday with the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), so next Monday, July 17, they will go to the Faculty of Medicine to resume the selection ceremony.

“On our side, we will continue in due time and form with the institutional processes to make it clear to the state and university authorities that we do not want to skip social service, but rather guarantee our safety and well-being.”

Sosa also stressed that although the Ministry of Health was open to dialogue and willing to support the interns, the student leaders are waiting for the official documents that confirm the agreements that were reached during the dialogue table today. .

“At the moment everything was in word agreements. We hope that, as agreed, the health authorities will send us next Monday the documents that formalize the agreements we reached together.

Juan Carlos Sosa concluded by noting that in the coming days, the generational committee will announce in detail the selection process of the body that will be in charge of maintaining official communication with the SSY and UADY authorities. He also confirmed that they will establish contacts with groups of interns in other entities of the republic, and that they do not rule out holding peaceful demonstrations to raise awareness of the situation experienced by medical students in the state and in the country.
