The autopsy revealed that death was caused by complications of a small bowel obstruction related to previous bariatric surgery.

Parts of Presley’s intestine were trapped, or “strangled,” by scar tissue that formed following the surgery.

The artist had also developed a serious buildup of acids in her blood.

What is bariatric surgery and how common is it?

Bariatric surgeries are operations performed on the stomach or intestines to achieve weight loss. They are usually performed in cases of moderate or severe obesity when other methods have not worked.

There are several types of bariatric proceduresincluding those where part of the stomach is removed or redirected, or where a band is placed around part of the stomach to make it smaller.

The autopsy report did not clarify what type of operation Presley had, although experts say it was not a sleeve gastrectomywhich is the most common procedure.

Around 263,000 bariatric surgeries they were performed in 2021, according to Dr. Marina Kurian, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Only regarding 1% of people who qualify for that procedure end up having the operation.

How risky is the operation?

In general, bariatric surgery is “very safe,” Kurian said. According to the ASMBS, the risk of serious complications is approximately 4% and that of death, 0.1%.

“It is safer than a gallbladder operation”Kurian explained.

What are the possible complications?

Scar tissue, also known as adhesions, can form following surgery or other trauma to the abdomen. That can lead to kinks or blockages in the intestines, said Dr. Thomas Inge, chief of surgery and an expert in bariatric operations at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

In Presley’s case, It seems that “he had a sprain in the entire intestine”said Inge, who reviewed the autopsy report.

If not resolved quickly, the obstruction cuts off blood flow to the intestine, causing it to “strangle” and creating a cascade of potentially lethal problems. In Presley’s case, caused a toxic buildup of acids in her body and her heart stopped, according to the autopsy report.

Presley said she had abdominal pain and was not feeling well on the morning of her death, the report said. It was not clear if the pain was something new.

Anyone who has had an abdominal operation should seek prompt treatment. for the pain, Inge said. If diagnosed early, the problem can be treated.
