In an article published a few moments ago on the official website, Jeff Chamberlain talks regarding the development of the story ofOverwatch as we approach Season 6 which will begin on August 10. This returns to the introductory cinematic of the title and the evolution of the lore since, with in particular the next animated short film. Find it without further delay below.

“What if, in the cutscene, a group of kids visit an Overwatch museum on a school trip? »

I remember this idea popping up during our early discussions regarding the story for Overwatch’s initial cinematic trailer. She was the one who ended up influencing the way we create stories for Overwatch, and continues to do so today. Previously, we had considered more sinister and serious scenarios in order to help us set up this new universe, but eventually we realized that this warm and cheerful story was more what we wanted. We’ve mentioned films from our childhood that have a similar vibe and focus on characters, hope, and most importantly, emotions. That’s what we wanted to apply to Overwatch. From these conversations emerged key concepts such as “the future is worth fighting for” and “heroes and heroines inspire heroism”, which have guided us and allowed us to shape history and the general vibe of Overwatch to make it what it is today.

Talking regarding “today” and “story,” we’re regarding to launch our first set of story missions for Overwatch. For those of you who are new to this universe, or who are not up to date with its history, we advise you to start with the new animated mini-series “Genesis”, of which the first two episodes are available, with the third arriving on July 20. These short films will allow you to have a summary of the beginning of the history of Overwatch and the reasons for which this group was formed, and to understand why its members were considered (for a certain time) as the most great heroes and heroines of this futuristic world. We intend to offer more content in the vein of “Genesis” to continue to enrich the universe (which is very large!) and, above all, to advance the story.

Well, back to that last one. We know that the Overwatch organization was created in order to deal with the Omniums crisis, a global event in which a powerful artificial intelligence, Anubis, took control of the omnics in an attempt to annihilate the humanity. After defeating Anubis and saving the world, Overwatch’s mission expanded. It then became a global organization made up of thousands of people committed to the struggle for peace, equality and prosperity for the entire population. Overwatch was then at its peak.

But unfortunately, over time and for many reasons, our band’s heyday has come to an end.

Overwatch has been disbanded. The original squad was forced to retire. Some of the members accepted it and decided to live a quiet life as civilians, but others had no intention of keeping a low profile. Reinhardt and his goddaughter, Brigitte, traveled the world to defend those in need. Winston, the gorilla with superior intelligence, isolated himself in the old Observatory complex: Gibraltar, where he occupied himself by designing innovative technologies and watching the world evolve and gradually move away from what he was when Overwatch watched over him. As for others, like Sojourn…well, I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise. You’ll find out more regarding his activities when the animated short dedicated to him, “Vocation”, is released just before the launch of Overwatch 2: Invasion. “Vocation” will be the final piece of the puzzle leading us to the invasion of Sector Zero and Overwatch’s reaction to its global attacks.

Overwatch’s story is extremely important to the entire creative team. It’s at the heart of our discussions, we’re improving it every day, and it’s one of the cornerstones of the gaming universe.
