After the French, Belgian employees are the most taxed in Europe, according to a study carried out by the Molinari Economic Institute in collaboration with EY and published on July 15, qualified as “tax freedom day” for employees in the kingdom.

This calendar day is defined by the authors of the study as the day “when an employee theoretically stops working to pay social security contributions and taxes and disposes of his salary as he sees fit”.

Labor tax rates have remained stable in Belgium since the “tax shift” decided under the previous federal government and which reduced the cost of labor in Belgium. Compared to 2012, the Belgians celebrate the “day of tax freedom” 24 days earlier, it is underlined.

In France, the “tax freedom day” falls on July 17. It falls on June 16 in the Netherlands, June 10 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and April 16 in Cyprus, an EU country where employees are the least taxed.

According to the study, the “effective tax rate” (including VAT) of a Belgian employee is 53.5%, compared to 44.1% on average in the EU of 27. In our country, an employer spends 215 euros for an average employee to receive 100 euros net following contributions and taxes.

“Belgian administrations fail to provide services commensurate with the sums they deduct from employees”, believe the authors of the study, noting that among the 28 countries studied, Belgium is ranked 11th out of 28 in the overall OECD PISA ranking on educational achievement, 14th out of 28 for happiness, according to the 2022 United Nations World Happiness Report and 19th out of 28 for quality of life, according to the Top Countries Survey conducted in 2021 by US News.
