According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the second generation Apple Watch Ultra will be released later this year and will feature 3D-printed mechanical parts. In a post published on Medium, Kuo said his latest research on Apple’s supply chain indicates that the company is investing heavily in 3D printing technology as a source of innovation for its products.
Thus, the company must adopt titanium mechanical parts of the new Apple Watch Ultra made by 3D printing. Components can include digital crown, side button and action button. These titanium parts are currently CNC machined.
Among the advantages of this change are the potential to improve production time and reduce costs. As this is the first time that the company tests the technology, if shipments from suppliers go wellKuo believes that more Apple products will adopt 3D printing in the future.
So far, only Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said that Apple will release a second-generation Apple Watch Ultra alongside the Apple Watch Series 9 models later this year. As such, Kuo’s latest report seems to add more credence to the belief that the Apple Watch Ultra will follow the same annual refresh cycle as the standard Apple Watch series.
