One AirTag helped authorities quickly arrest a burglar who had broken into a woman’s home in Hartlepool, England. For the The Northern Echo, police said the suspect is named Dylan Balmer; his age, however, was not disclosed.

Still according to police, the thief entered the house through an unlocked door and took the victim’s purse and car keys. However, on the keychain, an AirTag was stuck – which helped the victim track his location.

using the network Look for (Find My)she managed to locate the stolen belongings and the thief, tracking the signal to a nearby hotel, where she questioned Balmer personally regarding the objects that were in his possession – something that is not recommended by the authorities, who advise the activation of the police forces before any action.

Initially, Balmer claimed to have found them, but ended up giving them to the woman. He was later arrested at a marina in Durham, which is also in England. Although he got hold of the victim’s car keys, nothing was stolen from inside the car.

Police believe that when confronted by the victim, the suspect might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Balmer, who, like the victim, also lived in Hartlepool, confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty.

At a hearing, the criminal’s lawyer regretted the damage caused to the victim. Even so, the judge stressed the seriousness of the crime and its impact on the safety of the victim. Balmer was sentenced to 15 months in prison for the theft.
