A bariatric surgery that was performed a few years ago left sequelae.
A report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said Thursday that Lisa Marie Presley’s cause of death last January was “followingmath of small bowel obstruction.”
A small bowel obstruction refers to a blockage in the small intestine, often due to things like soft tissue or scarring, a hernia, or cancer.
Without surgery, it can cause intestinal tissue to die or become perforated, leading to death.
Presley’s autopsy report, obtained by CNN Thursday, includes the official opinion of Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Juan M. Carrillo, who attributed his small bowel obstruction to “adhesions that developed following bariatric surgery of years ago. This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery.”
Carrillo also testified that he reviewed the toxicology results from the autopsy, which showed “therapeutic” levels of oxycodone in Presley’s blood, meaning levels that are in the range of medically useful and not dangerous.
It added that the metabolite of quetiapine (which is used to treat depression, schizophrenia or manic episodes) and buprenorphine (a pain reliever that can also be used to treat opioid addiction) was found to be present, but that these “are not contribute to death.
“There is no evidence of injury or crime. The manner of death is considered natural,” concluded Carrillo.
Lisa Marie, the only child of the late Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, died hours following being hospitalized following an apparent cardiac arrest on January 12. She was 54 years old.
Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Kaitlyn Aldana told CNN at the time that emergency services responded to a call in the 5000 block of Normandy Dr in Agoura Hills, California at 10:37 a.m. local time due to cardiac arrest.
Aldana would not confirm the name of the patient, who might not be identified due to privacy laws, but said he was taken to a local hospital at 11:17 a.m.
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman told CNN that they assisted firefighters on a medical call that morning, but also did not confirm the name of the patient.
“Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie,” Priscilla Presley said in a statement provided to CNN by a representative at the time.
“They are deeply grateful for everyone’s support, love and prayers, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time,” they added.
Lisa Marie Presley’s last public appearance just days before her death was at the Golden Globes, which she attended with her mother to support the Baz Luhrmann film “Elvis” regarding her late father.
