The union formed by employees of the Apple in Maryland (United States) — the first Apple Store to unionize, it is worth remembering — is formally accusing Apple of acting “in bad faith” in the negotiations. According to the Bloombergthe group alleges that the company is “stagnant” and that it has not responded to the main demands made by employees.
Accusing Apple of adopting a clear pattern of “backward trading”, Apple International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers lodged the complaint with US National Council on Labor Relations (National Labor Relations Boardor NLRB), further arguing that the only counterproposals offered by Maçã present “solutions” that would keep the the status quo in the company-employee relationship promoted by the company.
Another complaint from employees is that Apple is sharing confidential information regarding negotiations with its other retail stores, when the negotiation process should be closed. It’s the group’s second complaint once morest Apple since unionization — last year, the company was sued over issues involving health and education benefits.
The biggest sign of tension between the two parties was given yesterday, the day that the union and Apple started the last negotiation session. On Twitter, the group alleged that Apple has taken “blatant measures that can only be interpreted as intentional moves to derail the progress” the union has achieved so far.
In a thread on the social network, the group said that Apple’s actions are configured as clear violations of the National Labor Relations Law (National Labor Relations Actor NLRA), considered a historic landmark for policies to protect the rights of private sector workers in the USA that is defended by the NLRB.
The proposals presented so far by Apple, for them, would only maintain the company’s current policies for rights such as sick leave, disgust leave (mourning) and unpaid leave. “These overtures were not just condescending and passive-aggressive, but were acts of ‘Shallow Bargaining,'” the group added.
In addition to the aforementioned points, unionized employees want Apple to offer increases of up to 10% in payroll, to promote changes in vacation and overtime policies, and to implement a tipping system.
Could it be that, with the process, they will have their requests met? Let’s wait for the case to unfold…
