CHICAGO – Three people died and “many others” remained hospitalized with “serious injuries” following an accident involving a Greyhound passenger bus and several commercial vehicles in Madison County, authorities said.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), at 1:54 a.m. Wednesday, a Greyhound bus traveling west on Interstate 70 struck three commercial vehicles parked on the exit ramp to the Silver Lake I rest area. -70 in Highland, regarding 280 miles west of Chicago and regarding 40 miles outside of St. Louis.
The three fatalities were identified as: Juan Vásquez-Rodríguez, 34, a resident of Passaic, New Jersey; Buford Paya, 71, of Supai, Arizona; and Bradley Donovan, 47, of Springfield, Illinois.
According to ISP, four injured people were transported by helicopter and at least 10 by ambulance to area hospitals.
All the injured were traveling on the Greyhound bus, confirmed ISP.
At around 7:45 am the westbound travel lanes reopened to regular traffic.
