iOS 17: the 5 main new features to try

2023-07-13 16:41:15

You have just installed the first public beta of iOS 17 and do not see any drastic change compared to the version of last year? This is normal: if the update brings a lot of changes, these are not necessarily highlighted. You can therefore discover them as you navigate or by rummaging through the Settings. If you don’t know where to start, here are 5 new things to try on iOS 17.

Create your contact card

iOS 17 introduces new, more fun and customizable contact cards. We can use a photo, his Memoji or simply the monogram of his initials. It is possible to adjust different elements and change the typography, or add filters.

You can customize the cards for each contact, and iOS will automatically send yours to your correspondents. It can also be sent by AirDrop by bringing two iPhones close to each other. Of course, everyone needs to be on the most recent beta for now. In the future, the function will also be compatible with certain Apple Watches (Series 6 and above).

NameDrop in action: just bring two iPhones together to initiate contact sharing. Their screen must be on, which is always the default case for the iPhone 14 Pro (right).

Play with the new stickers

iOS 17 also takes advantage of the automatic clipping of topics that appeared last year to allow you to quickly create new stickers. The maneuver being quite simple, it should allow you to quickly create a small collection. To do this, you can go through the Messages menu classifying the different photos by category. It is also possible to display a snapshot in Photos and keep pressed on its subject: a menu should offer you to convert it into stickers.

It is possible to add different effects to a sticker (big white borders, cartoon effect…), and even to make video versions on the Live Photos. Note that the emojis also become stickers: you can therefore stick them anywhere on the messages and send them in large format.

Try “Standby” mode

A new ‘Standby’ feature is coming this year, allowing the iPhone to display information or activate Siri while charging. The function must be activated within Settings and snaps into place when iPhone is locked, charging, and in landscape orientation.

The display offers 3 screens: a first with widgets, a second with photos and a third presenting different clocks. We can alternate with a simple swipe up and customize them as we wish. This “Standby” function is obviously more practical with an iPhone 14 Pro and its always-on screen, but is also available on older models. You will then have to tap on the screen to bring it out of standby.

Activate the “Distance from the screen” function

The new version of iOS wants to take care of your eyes: the iPhone can now send you an alert when you stand too close to the screen. Apple relies for this on the TrueDepth camera of its phones and tablets compatible with Face ID.

The “Screen Distance” feature pops up a big warning if you look at the screen too closely for a while. This new feature is not activated by default and can be found in the section screen time of the Settings d’iOS.

Find the new FaceTime gestures

To end this little overview, don’t hesitate to take a look in FaceTime: the app has gained some new 3D effects that appear when you make certain gestures. There are 8 in total, which can be enabled through the iOS Control Center. They are also available in some other apps like Snapchat.

The novelty is available on iPhone 12 and later models, only using the front camera. It also works on some recent iPads (Pro M1, Air 4, mini 6) and on Apple Silicon Macs.
