Doubt, in Maylis. Tuesday, July 11, two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza were confirmed, one in Saint-Yaguen, the other, therefore, in Maylis. The ducks from these two farms were slaughtered the next day, Wednesday July 12. More “given the very atypical circumstances of the occurrence of these outbreaks” writes the Landes prefecture in a press release published Thursday, July 13, new analyzes have been carried out, the results of which are contradictory.

“In view of their simultaneity following weeks without a new case in the Landes, the distance between the two farms, the results of the surrounding health surveillance, the State services have decided, exceptionallyto carry out additional tests in these two farms.” The results of the additional analyzes confirm the presence of the virus in the farm concerned in Saint-Yaguen. On the other hand, they came back negative regarding the exploitation in Maylis.

Other analyzes in progress

The question remains: how did we get to this situation? How might the first tests be positive, and the second not? Faced with these conflicting resultsthe prefecture ordered additional analyses, sequencing, in order to identify with certainty which of these tests is reliable.

“The national reference laboratory was mobilized to assess the process that led to the results obtained. The conclusions of this research will be known within a few days.“explains the Landes prefecture.
While waiting for these results, the restricted areas associated with each of the two outbreaks are maintained. On the other hand, no preventive depopulation measures will be implemented around the Maylis farm.

The profession has its fingers crossed

“Fingers crossed that it is the second test that is right”, confides Marie-Hélène Cazaubon, the president of the Landes Chamber of Agriculture*.* This case of bird flu, in Maylis, in the heart of Chalosse, is indeed worrying the profession. La Chalosse is the epicenter of the production of fattened ducks, the farms are very numerous and very close to each other. The virus can therefore circulate very easily.
