Ion Izagirre Triumphs in the 12th Stage of Tour de France 2023: Basque Runner Claims Second Victory

Ion Izagirre won the 12th stage of the Tour de France in Belleville-en-Beaujolais alone. The 34-year-old Spaniard signed his second stage success on the Grande Boucle, seven years following his victory in Morzine on July 23, 2016. The yellow jersey remains on the shoulders of Dane Jonas Vingegaard, outgoing winner.

The Basque runner from the Cofidis team was 58 seconds ahead of Frenchman Mathieu Burgaudeau and American Matteo Jorgenson. The Basque veteran built his victory on the last climb of the day, the Col de la Croix Rosier, breaking away from the group of breakaways regarding thirty kilometers from the finish.

He widened the gap on the descent before holding on in the final once morest six riders chasing him, including Thibaut Pinot and Guillaume Martin.
