The New York Post reported that researchers at Washington State University analyzed cases of alcohol-related liver disease from 2016 to 2020, and that the number of liver disease patients in 2020, when Corona 19 entered the United States, increased by 12.4% compared to 2019.

“Severe liver disease appears to increase over time, but appears to have increased more dramatically during the pandemic,” said Dr. Chris Cordley, a professor at Washington State University School of Medicine. It is highly likely that various factors, such as a decrease in alcohol consumption, contributed to the much higher rate of alcohol consumption.”

Alcohol-related hepatitis is common in men overall, but between 2019 and 2020, female patients with alcohol-related hepatitis increased by 14.6% and male patients by 12.2%. The increase in female patients has outpaced the increase in male patients.

Indeed, a 2021 study found that from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to the end of 2020, alcohol consumption by housewives with young children increased by nearly 325%. “In particular, women had a higher in-hospital mortality rate than other patients,” said Dr. Cordley.

“Many people who increased their drinking during the pandemic were already on the verge of developing severe alcoholic liver disease,” said Dr. Jovan Julien of Harvard Medical School.

According to the study, published in the American Journal of the Medical Science, the largest increase in alcohol-related liver disease cases was in the western United States.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Californians who died from alcoholic liver disease jumped to 14,209 between 2020 and 2022.

Mortality was highest in rural areas of the East and North, even in California. In Humboldt County, California, the death rate from alcoholic liver disease was more than double the statewide death rate.
