SK Rapid welcomed a proverbial high-ranking visitor to the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday followingnoon. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen brought a special exhibit to the green and white club museum and handed it over to managing directors Steffen Hofmann and Marcus Knipping and head coach Zoran Barišić.
The red-white-red head of state provided the RAPIDEUM with a green-white ball signed by Antonín Panenka, the legendary 1976 European champion and member of the Rapid century team. Van der Bellen received this at the beginning of June as a gift from his Czech colleague Petr Pavel during his inaugural visit.
Alexander Van der Bellen combined his visit to Hütteldorf with a half-hour tour of the RAPIDEUM and in return received a home jersey flocked with playmaker number 10 and his name from the green and white delegation. Steffen Hofmann says: “I would like to thank the Federal President very much for the loan, which is now being displayed in the player column of our club legend Antonín Panenka. It is a great honor for us that the head of state came to see us in person and I hope that we will soon be able to welcome Alexander Van der Bellen once more as our guest of honor at a European Cup match.”
The Federal President himself says: “It is so common for heads of state to give each other gifts on business visits. But a football autographed by Antonín Panenka – that was a special surprise from my Czech colleague Petr Pavel. That’s why I’m pleased that this ball has now found a very appropriate place with SK Rapid’s home ground.”
