Two years later the dramatic floods that hit Belgium, particularly in the province of Liège, we must rebuild taking this disaster into account. In what state of mind are the citizens of these municipalities, which have been affected? Asked regarding La Première, the mayor of Limbourg Valérie Dejardin (PS) explains: “For them it’s complicated. There are those who are convinced that we must change the way we operate and develop the territory, others who are convinced that it will not come back” and which call into question the management of the waters of the dam “and who find that they are going to have to suffer a double or even a triple penalty. And then there are those who have not been touched”.
A master plan defines the way in which to rebuild in terms of land use planning: “This master plan also concerns the watersheds, therefore the plateaus. I ask that these proposals apply well to the whole of the territory studied. The goal is not to punish once once more the municipalities affected by the floods. The plan affects 29 municipalities, there is an obligation for all the municipalities to work together to redraw the landscape of the enlarged basin of the Vesdre”.
Concretely, it is requested that evacuation zones in the event of flooding be planned in the village of Goé, upstream of Dolhain, “and to remove a set of functions linked to associations and leisure. It’s complicated for the inhabitants of Goé because it’s really the heart of the village. These functions must be able to be replaced elsewhere. We work with the associations and the inhabitants to explain things and that the goal is not to relive what we lived two years ago. These functions will perhaps have to be different but they must always exist. And there is the problem of the financing if we want to keep these functions elsewhere.In the center of Dolhain, private and public dwellings must be demolished in order to widen the Vesdre in certain places to prevent it from overflowing as in 2021. We have already lost inhabitants, which because of financial problems, we will obviously lose others”.
