The facts date back to July 2. That day, a 72-year-old man from Zwevezele decided to go for a bike ride with his wife. But when the two spouses arrived in Veldegem, they crossed paths with a particularly dangerous motorist. Shocked by this excessive speed, the septuagenarian did not hesitate to call the driver “crazy”. A remark that did not please the latter, who turned around to do battle with the cyclist.
This is where the versions differ. The septuagenarian’s wife claims that the 48-year-old driver violently pushed the septuagenarian towards the canal. The forty-something, he claims that he was caught by the cyclist, and that mutual pushes would have led the two men into the water. Seeing that the septuagenarian had fallen badly, he would have fled, under the influence of panic.
Following this incident, the cyclist had been transported to hospital in a serious condition. Ten days later, our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws announce that he unfortunately died on Wednesday from his injuries. For the forties, who spent a night in prison before being released on conditions, it now remains to be determined whether there is a link between his actions and the death of the septuagenarian. A particularly important element, since it might requalify the facts as “assaults and injuries resulting in death”.
