A driver trying to get away from authorities struck three people on Wednesday on Constitution Avenue NW, fatally injuring one man, according to a Secret Service official.

The collision happened just before 1:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Constitution Avenue NW, near Ellipse Park and the National Mall.

Secret Service officers attempted to pull over the driver of a Honda Accord at the intersection of 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue because the vehicle had an expired registration, according to the department.

The driver indicated he was going to stop, but fled south on 17th Street NW. He failed to stop for a red light and struck three people in the crosswalk at the intersection, according to Secret Service spokesman Lt. Paul Mayhair.

A witness, Ehab Sorour, was standing near the intersection when he saw the driver run over pedestrians and the victim who died from his injuries fell on the hood of the Honda. What supposedly happened next was even more shocking.

“All of a sudden, it just blew the guy away. The guy flew… fell on the hood,” she said. “All of a sudden, he backed up a little bit and ran over him once more and drove into the light.”

A 75-year-old Philadelphia man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died at the hospital, Mayhair said.

Two other people, including a 13-year-old girl, received medical attention at the scene for minor injuries.

Authorities are looking for the suspect and a blue 2006 Honda Accord with a Virginia license plate number 8718BE.

Constitution Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic in the area of the crash, but has since reopened.
