The European Central Bank invites Europeans to give their preferences on the themes proposed for the next series of euro banknotes. But, you will have to be patient before you can use them! Delivery is estimated for 2026.
The European Central Bank needs the opinion of these inhabitants of the euro zone with a public consultation, launched since Monday. They will be able to indicate their preferences between the pre-selected themes. The theme with the most votes will have the honor of being displayed on future tickets. European volunteers have until August 31 to answer the questionnaire.
“We want Europeans to recognize themselves in the design of euro banknotes. This is why they will play an active role in the selection of the new theme”, explains Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB.
7 pre-selected themes
Europeans will be able to choose between seven themes pre-selected by the Governing Council of the ECB: the rivers that criss-cross Europe, European culture, innovation on the continent, European values such as freedom or democracy, birds, hands that built Europe or the people of Europe.
After the voting closes, the ECB will use the results of the surveys to select the theme for the next series of banknotes by 2024. A design competition will be organized followingwards to fine-tune the details. The objective of this consultation is clear. “We want Europeans to recognize themselves in the design of euro banknotes. This is why they will play an active role in the selection of the new theme”, explains Christine Lagarde in a press release.
Europeans will once once more have the opportunity to express their preferences regarding the design proposals that will emerge from this competition. But, we will have to be patient to have these tickets in our wallets. The ECB is expected to take a decision on the future design and the deadlines for the production and issuance of new banknotes only in 2026.
