– Cheese with cheese on cheese on cheese
In Thailand there is “The Real Cheeseburger”, roughly speaking a stack of cheese slices between two halves of a bun. The new creation has caused a hype – but does it taste good?

The hamburger chain Burger King has a new product on offer in Thailand. It’s quite minimalist: 20 slices of cheese should be on a “Real Cheeseburger”, that’s it. Burger King launched the new product on Thai menus a few days ago, at a price of just 109 baht (2.75 francs), so quite cheap compared to the usual entry-level offer of 190 baht. The thing quickly went viral on social media, with many users posting videos on Tiktok in which they try the new burger. It seems like a test of courage to bite into it. So go ahead and check for yourself whether the offer even exists.
In the nearest Burger King in the “MBK Mall” near Siam Square, a rather small branch of the global company, people don’t even bat an eyelid when ordering. The stores are said to have stopped taking delivery orders since Tuesday in order to be able to meet the demand from walk-in customers. The saleswoman gives the order to the back, then the burger comes very quickly, before all other requests, because such a pure cheeseburger is easy to make: stack the slices crosswise, warm them up a bit and the thing is done.
No meat is fried, no mayo spread on the bun slice, no ketchup spilled on the lid. Neither a lettuce leaf nor a slice of tomato interferes. It’s really just a big pile of cheese. The stack of cheese slices is simply taken to the mouth, dry and sorted, then you bite through once, whereupon the 20 slices condense into a mass due to the chewing pressure. It feels like biting into dough. Surprisingly, the first bite doesn’t taste as bad as you’d think, but it’s hard to get past the third bite. From a nutritional point of view, you’re just eating a block of fat sandwiched between two slices of sugar anyway. If you can eat a whole «Real Cheeseburger», you have to be hungry and have strong nerves. And drink a liter of coke with it. At least.
Would you like a tom yam burger?
You have to know that fast food chains in Thailand make regarding as much sense as coffee chains in Vienna. You carry owls to Athens, so to speak, because the famous street food, especially in Bangkok, is also fast food – only that it is prepared fresh and much cheaper on the side of the road. Nevertheless, in addition to Burger King, there are of course McDonald’s, KFC and occasionally you can even find a Wendy’s. The shops are usually close together in the large shopping malls, which Thais like to go to because they are air-conditioned and often also have a multiplex cinema and supermarkets.
Discussions regarding whether McDonald’s fries are better than KFC or whether the Whopper is better than the Big Mac are not very widespread in Bangkok. But the Thai franchisees always come up with something new. In addition to the “Real Cheeseburger”, there are also rice dishes and “Tom Yam” burgers at Thai-Burger-King. Thailand vacationers know the hot and sour soup that is served here with shrimp between rolls.
Incidentally, the following-effects following eating a “Real Cheeseburger” are similar to those of all other products from these chains: greed quickly turns into disgust, which then lasts longer in the case of the pile of cheese because it is really heavy on the stomach. It is doubtful that the cheap cheese burger will become a bestseller in the long run. It’s more of a marketing gimmick. But at least it worked quite well.
