The BBC staffer involved in a scandal over alleged sexual misconduct has been identified by his wife as veteran star presenter Huw Edwards. “I am making this statement on behalf of my husband, Huw Edwards, following five extremely difficult days for our family,” Vicky Flind said on Wednesday. Her husband suffers from “serious psychological problems” and is now “being treated as an inpatient in the hospital, where he will remain for the foreseeable future”.

For their part, the London police announced on Wednesday evening that there was no evidence that a criminal offense had been committed in the case. Therefore, the police do not go any further in the affair. Flind announced that as soon as her husband was able to do so, he would comment on the reports.

The Sun newspaper quoted a woman on Friday as saying an unnamed BBC presenter had paid her then 17-year-old child tens of thousands of pounds over a three-year period for pornographic photos. On Sunday, the BBC said it had released the employee. In the past few days, further allegations of misconduct have been made.

Huw Edwards’ name had already been circulating massively online prior to his wife’s statement. The 61-year-old moderates the 10 p.m. news in Great Britain – it was also he who announced the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death to the world last October.

Before the Welshman was identified by his wife, some of his colleagues had also commented on the case. BBC star Jeremy Vine urged the presenter on a TV show to make his identity public to prevent further damage to the broadcaster’s reputation. A former BBC employee described the presenter in a podcast as “extremely angry” at the media reports of the affair.
