Now it is clear who will start at the PTO US Open. For the second race of the series on August 5, 2023, the organizers have announced a field that leaves nothing to be desired with 13 of the top 20 athletes in the world rankings. Those who are not automatically qualified can still hope for a wildcard this week.

The “Strength of Field” (SOF) of 93.15 already gives an idea of the caliber of athletes you will be dealing with at the US Open of the PTO Tour on August 5th in Milwaukee. A similar picture emerges for women. The men’s entry list currently includes 24 names, including 13 athletes positioned in the top 20 in the world rankings.
Only seven athletes from the top 20 are missing
At the top is the Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt. In the last race he was only beaten by Australian Max Neumann, who is not on the list now. Just like Blummenfelt’s compatriot and training partner Gustav Iden. The next positions on the start list are therefore occupied by two-time Roth winner Magnus Ditlev (DEN) and Ironman Vice World Champion Sam Laidlow (FRA). France is also represented by Clément Mignon, among others, while Magnus Ditlev will be joined by Daniel Bækkegård, Kristian Høgenhaug, Miki Taagholt and Thor Bendix Madsen from his home country. The Americans Sam Long, Ben Kanute and Jason West, among others, can use a location advantage. Britain’s Alistair Brownlee will also try the 100km race format once more following falling back in the lead while running in Ibiza. From Germany, Frederic Funk and Florian Angert are two athletes who can help shape the race. In addition to the previously known starters, two wildcards each for men and women will be awarded on Thursday, July 13th.
Proven format over 100 kilometers
As with all other races in the series, the US Open has a total distance of 100 kilometers to be completed. The swim starts over a course of two laps of one kilometer each, separated by an Australian Exit. There is only one turn of 180 degrees. The following 80 kilometers on the bike lead along the shore of Lake Michigan and have to be completed in seven laps. Finally, the 18-kilometer run leads through Veterans Park over five laps. This year, the PTO US Open will be held in parallel with the national championships of the United States Triathlon Association (USA Triathlon). With the USAT Age Group National Championships and Youth & Junior Nationals co-located for the first time, it promises to be the largest triathlon weekend in the United States, with more than 7,000 participants and 20,000 spectators expected.

The US Open will be broadcast live on Eurosport 1. However, due to the time difference and the late start from 4:15 p.m. local time, fans have to prove their endurance: the broadcast in Germany begins at 11:15 p.m.
