Afghan culture in the hands of the Taliban

Nearly two years following the Taliban regained power, Afghanistan continues to experience a serious attack on individual rights and freedom of expression. The NGO PEN International recently denounced the arrest of the poet Haseeb Ahrari. This follows other arrests of rights and freedoms defenders, highlighting the risks faced by dissidents, artists and human rights defenders. The Taliban had promised to maintain certain rights when they returned to power in 2021, but since then women’s access to higher education has been banned and individual freedoms have been largely restricted. Many Afghans have felt the need to hide items that might endanger them, such as books and electronic devices.
