[ 매드타임스 장영주 대학생 기자] Feelings are important to us. In life, feelings also make important choices. Sometimes we decide on uncertain issues according to our feelings, and we walk according to our feelings whether the path is right or wrong.

While these feelings are sometimes personal, they often go in the direction set by society. The same goes for using paper straws instead of plastic straws while thinking regarding the environment. Even though it is not for the environment, we consume at many shops that provide paper straws, and we are satisfied thinking that consumption is a step to protect the earth.

What is it for the environment? In fact, paradoxically, what we have to do to protect the environment is to do nothing. Nevertheless, as we live and society operates, countless actions cause various results.

Surprised by these results, the world has long been interested in eco-friendly materials and mentions of environmental protection continued. Especially following the pandemic situation, the interest is getting more and more focused. Many people are thinking regarding the environment and health, reducing disposable products, and finding a more sustainable lifestyle that can protect and continue ‘our’ life. In this process, we came across a movement to refrain from using disposable products and make it a habit to use multi-use containers. Not a few people try to use the multi-use container they carry when consuming outside. However, that is only part of it. Disposable products provide us with too convenient a life.

So, one of the things that appeared was the paper straw. The use of plastic straws, which get stuck in the noses of marine life and destroy the environment and life, provides obvious environmental pollution and makes them uncomfortable to use. Some people find paper straws themselves because they think it is more environmentally friendly to use paper, which decomposes faster than plastic, as straws.

But, is paper really eco-friendly?

Hong Kong bank, HSBC Corporation refers to the environmental destruction caused by the use of such paper. The advertisement, which starts with responding to the question “Would you like to print a receipt?”, shows what results people perform with ‘simple’ actions. Numerous receipts are constantly being printed, conveying the message that the ecosystem that has grown and continued over a long time will be destroyed in an instant.

Receipts are essential in banking. Recently, as mobile banking is used, electronic receipts are often used, but when using bank windows or ATMs, paper receipts are provided instead of electronic receipts. In addition, since it is a document that can prove transaction details, it is common to print it out first rather than skip it without printing it. If you do not use the printed receipt, you can simply shred it or throw it in the trash, so print it out comfortably.

Paper decomposes faster than plastic, but a large amount of carbon is released in the process of making paper. Above all, in order to make paper, logging is inevitable. Also, depending on the type of paper, it is difficult to recycle. These various papers are usually used for ‘single use’ and end up in landfills like other single use items and garbage. The various landfills and mountains of garbage that exist around the world are not diminishing, but are only becoming more polluted by new and existing materials that are thought to be ‘greener’.

Despite this fact, it is simple that we use paper straws as eco-friendly. It breaks down faster than plastic, but not for that reason. It’s just that a change in subject matter without a change in behavior is not bothersome. This is because environmental issues feel too far away and are not immediately considered important. movie <엘리멘탈>As if the problem of leakage of water mixed with oil, which had deviated from the central theme, was not fundamentally addressed and passed over. We overlook environmental issues that feel relatively far away because of our existence right in front of our eyes, the direction of our lives, and the things we need to survive. And, saying that my unchanging changes are for the sake of the environment, I forget while relieving psychological discomfort.

HSBC says the environment starts with stopping behavior. In order to prevent this kind of pollution, it was mentioned in the video that we should stop using unnecessary paper, and that we would start with ourselves. Like that company, many companies and individuals are always trying to protect the environment.

Domestic company Samsung mentioned that it would achieve a ‘paperless company’, and Trashbusters approached various generations by encouraging the use of multi-use containers instead of disposable ones even in a pandemic situation. In addition, at the present time when records through paper, such as decorating a diary, are spreading like a trend, the activities of Orom, a company that aims to use paper that does not destroy the environment by launching a diary using Korean traditional paper, Hanji, are also meaningful.

It is clear that the beginning of paper straws was for the environment, even though the results were not good due to the direction people use them. There is only one thing we can think of. For the sake of the environment, we must abandon our current way of life. There are various organizations and private companies that work for the environment. Keep an eye on them and join them if their actions are meaningfully changing.

HSBC’s advertisement mentions the copy below.

“Don’t make the Earth pay for it.”

Let’s think regarding who we blame for the actions we can’t throw away from our comfort. We must change.
