Netflix documentary “Quarterback” ensures NFL boom on RTL
NFL and RTL benefit from gigantic football boom
NFL: Football is getting bigger and bigger in Germany

Since the success of “All or Nothing” or “Drive to Survive”, streaming documentaries have been the game changer for teams, leagues or entire sports. On the big entertainment platforms like Netflix, you create exclusive content that then ensures that the sport is emotionalized and more people tune in who have previously had little interest in it.

What first worked in the NFL has become almost one-to-one in recent years with football teams like Manchester City, the All-Blacks, Formula 1, the ATP in tennis, the PGA Tour in golf and now the Tour de France copied. The sport of chess, already at a high level as a pastime during the pandemic, was shot into new relevance with “The Queen’s Gambit”. Sneaker fans were happy regarding the price increases caused by the Jordan documentary “Last Dance” with massive profits. Netflix sets trends and ensures incredible reach.

Netflix documentary “Quarterback” starts on July 12, 2023

Now tomorrow, Wednesday, “Quarterback” will be released, a new football documentary that may come at the perfect time in Germany: RTL will start a new football era in a few weeks with two games on Sunday evening on the main channel from 7 p.m prime time. In recent years, the NFL has been the second most popular TV sport and the league is also currently growing commercially. The waiting list for today’s sale of tickets for the Germany game easily cracked the 2.5 million interested parties. Craziness! So what else is possible?

So who are the big winners if the series really takes off? For this you have to deal with the content of “Quarterback”. The series was developed and produced by NFL Films, Omaha Productions, the production company of former NFL superstar Peyton Manning, and 2PM, the same company owned by Patrick Mahomes. Both the NFL and Netflix allow special insights into the job of the quarterback that have not existed before.

In addition to the current MVP of the league, Patrick Mahomes, the two quarterbacks Kirk Cousins from the Minnesota Vikings and Marcus Mariota are also protagonists. The latter lost his job with the Atlanta Falcons during the season and is now just a backup with the Philadelphia Eagles. Kirk Cousins played an impressive 13-4 regular season but lost straight into the playoffs. And Patrick Mahomes not only won the title as the best player, but won the Super Bowl “on one leg”. Three completely different storylines with drama, emotions and success.

NFL and RTL benefit from the extreme football boom

From my point of view, in addition to the NFL, RTL in particular as a new broadcaster that approaches the NFL much larger and more ambitious than ProSieben (for all its merits over the last ten years – without ranNFL, football would not be nearly as relevant in Germany!) and would like to conquer potential target groups in particular . But the three teams can also benefit: The Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes’ special Super Bowl story will reach and electrify significantly more people. But the Vikings & Falcons are also intensively supported and can thus win hearts and fans.

I’m curious to see how many new fans are interested in the topic and of course I secretly hope that our Mahomes biography from last year will climb the Amazon rankings once more. Have you all already read at home, right? What do you think: How is the documentary “Quarterback” hitting here in Germany? Or is she just good content for current NFL fans?

To person: Daniel Jensen produces digital sports content professionally and has been a host in the Footballerei in front of the microphone. His love for football began during an exchange year in Kansas. On September 6, 2022 is his book “Patrick Mahomes – The Incredible Story of the NFL Superstar” appeared. He reports weekly here on the first NFL game in Germany in November.
