Associations are protesting once morest the arrival at the Nice Opera next December of the Italian conductor, very close to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Conductor Beatrice Venezi, who had already been invited to conduct a concert in 2022, will return to the Côte d’Azur next December, to conduct the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra in the ballet Giselle by Adolphe Adam, as well as the New Year’s concert on January 1, 2024. An invitation to which a dozen associations and trade unions are firmly opposed, who do not see favorably the coming of a close friend of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “In a context of trivialization of the far right and fascism, the invitation made constitutes a political gesture that we strongly contest and denounce”can we read in a joint press release signed by the eleven associations and trade union organizations which oppose the arrival of Beatrice Venezi.
This is not the first time that the arrival of the Italian conductor has been disputed in France. Last April, Venezi conducted Bellini’s La sonnambula in Limoges. A presence that greatly displeased many associations, including the League of Human Rights, which denounced the links of the conductor with the Italian far right. It must be said that Beatrice Venezi has become the music advisor to the Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.
Reacting to the controversy, and to the request for cancellation of the concerts of Beatrice Venezi in Nice, by means of a press release, transmitted to AFP, the director general of the Opéra de Nice, Bertrand Rossi, tries to ease the tensions , stating that “music has the power to transcend divides and bring people together around a common experience, it is essential to separate art from politics”. It is not sure that the associations are satisfied with this answer. To be continued…
