The risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is significantly increased if the mother has dementia, a study has found.

A joint research team led by Professor Ki-Woong Kim of the Department of Psychiatry at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Professor Dae-Jong Oh of the Institute of Corporate Mental Health at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital investigated the family history of dementia among 17,194 elderly people residing in 8 countries including Korea, Germany, Italy and the Philippines. , analyzed the effect of parents’ history of dementia on their children. The average age was 72.8 years.

The study found that if at least one of the parents had a history of dementia, the risk of developing dementia increased by 47%. Among several types of dementia, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, called senile dementia, increased by 72%. The risk of dementia did not increase significantly if the father had a history of dementia, but the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease increased by 80% if the mother had dementia.

The research team said, “Previously, the apolipoprotein e4 allele was a genetic trait that might increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, but this study shows that maternal genetic traits such as the X chromosome and mitochondrial DNA can also have a significant effect on the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease. suggests,” he said.

Professor Kim Ki-woong said, “Since the risk of developing dementia is determined not by a single gene, but by the interaction of various genes and the environment, just because a parent has dementia does not necessarily lead to dementia in the person themselves.” It is necessary to diagnose cognitive impairment at an early stage and observe the changes continuously.”
