A Russian submarine commander was shot dead while jogging, while Russian media reported that he may have been targeted by someone who was tracking him on a popular running app.

And the Russian official news agency “Tass” stated that Stanislav Rzhetsky was killed earlier this week in the city of Krasnodar, in southern Russia, by an “unknown person,” adding that “the motives for the crime are being investigated.”

And the Russian Investigative Committee said, in a comment it published on the Telegram application, that a man had been arrested in connection with the murder of Rzhetsky, adding that the suspect was in possession of a silenced pistol, which he “supposedly used to kill the victim.”

Russian media indicated that the killer may have been able to follow Rzhetsky’s movements using Strava, an app widely available in Russia used by runners and cyclists.

network reportedCNNRzhetsky’s running and cycling tracks appear on his Strava account, adding that among his regular runs while working in Krasnodar was the park where he was killed early Monday.

Russian TV “Tsargrad” said that the attacker “planned the killing so carefully that the moment of the attack was not shown on any surveillance cameras.”

“The killer waited in the park near the Olympus sports complex, where Rzhetsky used to jog regularly in the morning,” it said.

In turn, Ukrainian intelligence revealed how Rzhetsky was apparently shot, in a detailed statement on Telegram.

The agency did not explicitly claim responsibility for the killing of the Russian military commander, according to “CNN”.

The statement said, “The submarine commander was jogging in Victory Park in Krasnodar at around 6 am…he was hit by seven bullets from a Makarov pistol and died instantly as a result of gunshot wounds.”

“The park was empty due to heavy rain, so there were no witnesses who might provide details or identify the attacker,” the statement added.

The information reported by “CNN” indicates that Rzhetsky was the commander of one of the Russian “Kilo”-class submarines in the Black Sea Fleet, which is capable of launching Caliber cruise missiles, according to the Ukrainian statement and Russian news reports.
