Oerlikon and 3D Systems want to accelerate AM in semicon

Oerlikon has purchased the 4th DMP Factory 500 from 3D Systems. At the same time, the two companies are announcing a closer collaboration to scale up additive manufacturing to series production. The focus is on the semiconductor and aviation industries.

The new 3D metal printer will be installed in the Oerlikon factory in Huntersville (North Caroline). This makes it the first DMP machine of Oerlikon in the U.S. Oerlikon’s AM Application Engineering team will work with 3D Systems’ Application Innovation Group to develop applications for customers. With this, the two companies want to accelerate the acceptance of the technology for the production of critical components. With the metal printers from 3D Systems, Oerlikon offers customers from the semiconductor and aviation industry a validated and certified process. Aluminum was chosen as the material.

Shorter time to market

“Additive manufacturing technology is being used more and more quickly for series production. To remain competitive in key technology markets (including semicon and aerospace), scaling up to series production is dependent on the successful execution of application development, qualification and timely ramp-up to full production,” said Jonathan Cornelus, business development manager, Oerlikon AM. Because the engineering teams of both companies are tackling this together, an acceleration is expected. “The efficiency gains will maximize the benefits of additive manufacturing in design, materials, printing and finishing to break performance barriers in the supply chain.” This should lead to a lower total cost of ownership and a shorter time-to-market.
