Nothing CEO and Founder Carl Pei denied that the company is planning to launch a foldable smartphone. The executive gave a quick interview to a series of websites following the presentation of Nothing Phone (2).
According to Pei, foldable phones are “all the same” and that’s something consumers don’t want.
I don’t think consumers go around saying, hey, I wish my phone might fold. I think it’s an innovation that manufacturers are pushing on the consumer.
Another criticism of Pei to the segment of folding cell phones is regarding the exclusivity of the devices. For him, none has an extra feature or functionality that justifies its use.
it’s good that some companies are building it, but if you look at how foldables are evolving, they’re all the same once more. If you don’t see the logo anymore, hide the logo on the foldables, I don’t think a consumer can really tell them apart.
Despite the controversial speech, Pei says that the foldable smartphone sector should continue to grow as technological solutions mature.
So it won’t be a surprise if Nothing’s CEO changes his mind and starts selling his own option with a transparent design and integrated LEDs at the rear.
In related matters, the Nothing Phone (2) features Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, 6.7-inch AMOLED screen and 120 Hz rate, 50 MP main camera (OIS), 4,700 mAh battery with 45W charge and Android 13.
The Nothing Phone (2) is not yet available in Brazilian stores. To be notified when it arrives.
