‘Action Plan Against Extremism’ for MFG a missed opportunity

No dialogue, no community, no enlightenment, but even more division and control?

The ÖVP wants to expand and bring it into line with all political authorities. The togetherness and involvement of people mentioned in the report is once once more exhausted in empty words.

Parliamentary Deputy Joachim Aigner, MFG-Austria Federal Party Chairman

An action plan once morest extremism that completely misses the point and shows no dialogue, but once once more places those people who have rightly stood up once morest the exaggerated corona measures in the radical corner. “The state government has learned nothing, but is pouring additional oil on the fire,” says LAbg Joachim Aigner, MFG-Austria federal party chairman. And once once more, the critical voice of the almost dog-loving government partner FPÖ is missing on this point.

The measures taken to contain the corona pandemic have shown “how right-wing extremist groups take up the concerns and fears in order to subsequently anchor their own narrative”. This resulted in “a struggle for the sovereignty of interpretation, which resulted in an increased potential for radicalization”: “These lines in the 72-page “Action Plan Against Extremism” do not bode well for the future. It will continue to be divided, people with their legitimate concerns and fears will continue to be placed in the extremism corner,” says Joachim Aigner.

“The ÖVP wants to expand and bring their influence to the fore in all political instances. The togetherness and taking people along mentioned in the report is exhausted
once more in empty words.”

“The basic and human rights guaranteed in Austria, like the rule of law and democracy, form fundamental values that underlie the community,” the paper continues. It is almost ironic that this is exactly what the Corona measures movement was regarding. But unlike the critics of the measures, the ÖVP/FPÖ action plan once once more disregards any approach to dialogue, in relation to those who think differently or legitimate arguments, the extremism club is swung in the usual manner.

It is striking that above all any “right-wing extremism” is now obviously subsumed under the collective term “conspiracy theorists”. Joachim Aigner: “That goes in the direction of manslaughter. Who decides what so-called ‘conspiracy theories’ are, where is the line drawn? Nothing of this can be found in the present paper. Are there any limits at all, or with this expanded ‘Action Plan for Extremism’ is every dissenter now a ‘conspirator’ who should be monitored, fought and even locked away?” One cannot invoke fundamental and human rights for all and on the other hand open the floodgates to arbitrary opinions – one excludes the other.

No self-reflection

What is also completely ignored is the real reason why people got up back then and took to the streets once morest the state-imposed corona measures with all the restrictions and negative developments. This is reminiscent of the fireman who sets a fire himself in order to then extinguish it and be able to be celebrated as a hero. Joachim Aigner: “More self-reflection and acknowledgment of one’s own mistakes would have been appropriate here, rather than once once more placing the citizens of this country in the right or left corner.”

Not even the SPÖ and the Greens agreed

And the fact that the left-wing parties, such as the SPÖ or the Greens, of all people, reject the presented, primarily “right-wing” extremist action plan also speaks volumes, according to LAbg Manuel Krautgartner, MFG-Upper Austria club chairman: “Especially the left-left should actually support such a work be the first to agree and applaud this, but the opposite was the case. The bottom line is that something completely different is at stake: “The ÖVP wants to expand and bring its influence to the fore in all political instances. The togetherness and involvement of people mentioned in the report is once once more exhausted in empty words.”

Assigning blame instead of processing

Right-wing groups such as “The Identitarians” and “The Austrians” used the Corona demonstrations as spaces for radicalization and recruitment, and the uncertainty within the Austrian population was used opportunistically and used for their own purposes, according to the report. This is a clear reversal of the facts, a few right-wing demo participants (who were explicitly not wanted) became “everyone”: Concerned mothers, families, people from all walks of life and doctors led the Corona demonstrations – and have to do it once more and still get beaten with the extremism club. Governor Stelzer should take a good look and ask why, in his opinion, so many people were ‘ignorant’. This may be due to the total failure and the completely wrong corona information policy. The fact that Stelzer & Co. once more put all these people in the right-wing extremist corner does not bode well for the future: “No trace of the promised work-up. Instead, it’s moving in the direction of even more restrictions, reprisals and punitive measures for even more people – and because it says ‘fight once morest radicalism’, the mainstream swims along,” fears Joachim Aigner.
