The Marylebone Cricket Club’s World Cricket Committee has suggested major changes to the one-day format following the completion of the 2027 World Cup. The committee recommended reducing the number of bilateral ODIs following the World Cup. The MCC’s committee, led by former England captain Mike Gatting and comprising cricketing luminaries like former India captain Sourav Ganguly and Jhulan Goswami, met at Lord’s to assess the current state of international cricket ahead of the second Ashes Test.
According to a press note issued by the MCC on Tuesday, the committee has raised concerns regarding the role of ODIs outside the World Cup. They suggested eliminating bilateral ODIs, except those scheduled within a year of each World Cup.
“The suggestion is that the scarcity of ODI cricket achieved by removing bilateral ODIs, except in the year before each World Cup, would increase the quality. This will go a long way in reducing the chaos created by the excessive number of ODI series.” According to the committee report.
The growing popularity of franchise leagues in cricket poses a challenge to international cricket boards as Jason Roy and Trent Boult prioritize participation in these leagues over international commitments. Also, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are expanding their presence by acquiring teams from other leagues in the world. Teams are exploring the possibility of signing players to exclusive contracts for their franchises.
