Favaloro practiced rural medicine for twelve years in Jacinto Aráuz, a small town in the province of La Pampa, before being internationally recognized and creating a foundation with his name to promote research and teaching.
The Argentine Government declared this day in 2002, through Law 25,598, to remember the birth of Favaloro and to recognize all the doctors who work in this area.
“The Ministry of Education of the Nation, in agreement with the educational authorities of the different jurisdictions and within the scope of the Federal Council of Culture and Education, will agree on the commemoration of the National Day of Social Medicine in schools of the Argentine Republic. The Executive Power, through the Nation’s Ministry of Health, will implement in all the institutions dependent on it, the appropriate events for the concretion of the tribute to be rendered on the scheduled date”, says the legislative text, which also invites “the Provincial bodies with similar functions to implement the provisions in their respective jurisdictions”
Favaloro revolutionized medical science by introducing the aortocoronary bypass in cardiovascular surgery, a technique that radically changed the treatment of coronary disease.

This Monday, to celebrate the National Social Medicine Day and the centenary of the anniversary of Favaloro’s birth, the Favaloro Foundation organized an Anniversary Gala at the Teatro Colón with the presence of the orchestral ensemble of the National Philharmonic under the direction of Emmanuel Siffert performing classics by Mozart and Vivaldi and contemporary pieces.
All the proceeds were allocated to works carried out at the Foundation, which will build a new comprehensive center to care for more patients.
The Favaloro Foundation for Teaching and Medical Research was created in 1975, four years following the return of René Favaloro from the United States. Favaloro had worked at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where he created aortocoronary bypass or myocardial revascularization surgery, a milestone in the history of coronary disease.
