Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou: The Biggest Boxing Match in Recent Combat Sports History

2023-07-11 19:50:18

Boxing star, WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury will fight in the ring with the former champion UFC Francis Ngannou. Each of the competitors right now is at the top of their sport. Fury is definitely the most stellar heavyweight, if not a boxer at the moment. And Ngannou was only recently considered the strongest heavyweight in mixed martial arts (perhaps now this title has passed to Jon Jones). The fight between Fury and Ngannou will be held according to the rules of boxing, and this event will be the biggest event of the last five years in combat sports.

The last and almost the only time we saw a crossover of this level was in August 2017. Then the ex-world boxing champion in five weight categories Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the current holder of two UFC belts fought in the ring Conor McGregor. The victory went to the American (technical knockout in the 10th round), and the organizers of the fight announced that they managed to sell 4.3 million paid broadcasts. Only in one case in the history of boxing did a fight make a larger figure: in 2015, the same Mayweather, along with Manny Pacquiao, sold 4.4 million broadcasts.

Record for sales of paid broadcasts in MMA belongs to the UFC 229 event. Then, in the main battle of the tournament, they fought Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. The league later announced that it had managed to sell 2.4 million pay-per-views. At the moment, there is every reason to believe that the Fury-Ngannou fight may come close to all these events in terms of its scale.

Tyson Fury is the greatest heavyweight of his time. The Briton was not even 30 when he beat Wladimir Klitschko and won three of the four major titles (WBA, WBO and IBF). It happened in 2015. Then a long black streak began in Fury’s life: for several years, the boxer gained weight, struggling with depression and all sorts of harmful addictions. In 2018, Tyson returned, and by 2020 he had risen to the top once more. After the comeback, Fury spent nine fights (he won eight and drew one), smashed Deontay Wilder in a three-match confrontation and strengthened his WBC champion status.

Fury has recently been trying to negotiate a fight with WBA, WBO and IBF champion Oleksandr Usyk. But the teams might not come up with conditions that would suit everyone, and the fight had to be postponed indefinitely. And on the eve it became known that Usyk will defend once morest Daniel Dubois.

Fury’s closest rival Francis Ngannou one of the biggest stars in MMA. The Cameroonian has become the UFC’s most intimidating puncher in a few years. In the best league in the world, Ngannou has 14 fights and 12 wins. It is noteworthy that Francis has 10 knockouts on his account – and often these were just one-hit knockouts. In the spring of 2021, the Cameroonian became the champion by knocking out Stipe Miocic. And at the beginning of 2022, Ngannou took the victory by decision from Cyril Gan.

After his only UFC title defense, Ngannou tried for a long time to negotiate a new contract with the league, but he never managed to do it. Long before leaving the organization, Francis talked regarding wanting to fight some of the boxing stars like Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder. Also, the Cameroonian, according to him, tried to achieve a more respectful attitude towards himself. The position of the UFC on this issue was different: the league tried to arrange everything as if Ngannou was offered space conditions under a new contract, but he turned out to be too greedy.

For a long time, Ngannou sat without a contract from any of the leagues. He was also not offered fights with boxing stars. At some point, it might seem like Francis made a mistake by leaving the UFC. However, last May it became known that Ngannou received a lucrative contract with the PFL, which agreed to meet his conditions. And now it becomes known that Francis also got a fight with Fury. In other words, even if Ngannou fails his debut in boxing (namely, this is the outcome of his fight with Fury is considered the most likely among experts), he will certainly have enough reasons to consider himself the winner of the situation.

Fury vs Ngannou will take place in Saudi Arabia on October 28. The rules and a clear format of the fight have not yet been designated. In theory, the opponents should fight according to the rules of boxing, but some hybrid rules were also discussed.
