With the EX30, Volvo is showing its smallest and most sustainable model to date. The 4.23 meter short Stromer follows the motto “less is more”.
Last fall, Volvo gave a preview of the future electric flagship. The five-meter giant EX90 also started a new nomenclature, which the EX30 is now approaching from the other extreme. With a length of just 4.23 meters, the all-electric compact SUV will soon be by far the smallest model on the market. Incidentally, the XC40, which is around 20 centimeters longer, will remain in the range for the time being, as will the XC90, whose more modern electronic counterpart is the EX90.
Sustainability in focus – key data on the CO2 footprint
In Cologne this week, in addition to the EX90, the EX30 might also be examined more closely for the first time. In addition to the compact dimensions, the focus was primarily on sustainability. Because the experts present gave a credible impression of how everything at Volvo was done to not only make the EX30 particularly comfortable and safe, but also to save resources. The most important key data: By increasing the recycling rates for the most important raw materials, the EX30 has a quarter lower CO₂ footprint compared to the electric version of the XC40. Recycling has a particularly positive effect on aluminum (25 percent) as well as steel and plastic (27 percent each). Over the entire product and life cycle (assuming a mileage of 200,000 kilometers), the EX30 causes less than 30 tons of CO₂ emissions.
Material selection and recyclability in the Volvo EX30
The choice of materials for the interior is also an important lever: instead of leather and Alcantara, the seat covers, dashboard and door panels are made of natural materials such as flax or a wool blend, which in turn contains around 70 percent recycled polyester. Denim is also offered, which is obtained from the recycling process of used jeans. In general, the EX30 is designed to be 90 percent recyclable at the end of its life.
The Volvo EX30 will be available from 2024
But first, the EX30 needs to hit the market. The first copies should be in dealerships by early 2024 at the latest. Three motor drive layouts are offered, starting with the single motor with rear-wheel drive, 272 hp and a range of either 344 or 480 kilometers, up to the top version with two electric motors, all-wheel drive, 428 hp and a maximum range of 480 kilometers. An additional cross-country variant with off-road attributes was also announced.
Minimalism in design & equipment
The minimalist approach is the same for all versions, inside and out: while the purist front particularly catches the eye when it comes to the exterior design, the less-is-more approach runs through the entire interior. A single, central soundbar replaces all speakers, which not only saves valuable resources but also weight.
