Wallonia Hearing this Tuesday in committee of the Walloon parliament, Florence Gilbert de Cauwer, legal adviser to Federgon, the federation of HR service providers, pleaded for the service voucher to increase to 14 euros.
“We are pleading for a service voucher at 14 euros for customers. Of these 5 euros additional to the current cost, one euro would go directly to the housekeeper; 2 euros would be spent on training and coaching and 2 euros would improve the solvency of companies”, which face many difficulties, she explained.
“We carry the same message everywhere in Belgium because we are convinced that housekeepers deserve a fair salary and quality training. However, the current 9 euros is the cost of a bad sandwich on the holiday highway”, continued the representative of Federgon. “Having a housekeeper is not a right guaranteed by the constitution. It is a service that we want quality and for which the customer must be ready to pay”, she added.
Skepticism
These declarations – in the face of which parliamentarians were skeptical – come as the Walloon government has just validated at first reading a draft decree aimed in particular at prohibiting the additional fees imposed by many service voucher agencies. In return, the cost of these titles will drop from nine to 10 euros on 1 January.
If this text is adopted as it stands, no less than 15,000 Walloon housekeepers risk losing their jobs before the end of the year, Federgon has already warned. According to the federation, companies, whether large structures or SMEs, have “simply no more margin and will not be able to bear this additional cost”.
