NEW YORK — A group of New York teens had to be rescued from a raging river hours following trying to have a little fun over the summer.

The six teens, five boys and one girl ranging in age from 14 to 17, were rescued following meeting up to go inflatable swimming in Wappinger Creek in the Dutchess County town of La Grange, according to fire officials.

But heavy rains and runoff from deadly storms that hit the region from Sunday to Monday caused a very strong current and left them clinging to a small island that formed in midwater, firefighters said.

Two of the teens managed to escape the troubled waters and seek help. It took firefighters three hours to get the other four out of the river, authorities said.

Two of the teens were taken to the hospital for evaluation and one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
