Hans-Peter Mack was 62 years old and they are investigating possible perpetrators of the crime
The dismembered body of a 62-year-old German businessman who had been missing for a week has been found in the freezer of a house in southern Thailand, police said Tuesday.
Hans-Peter Mack’s body was found around 11 p.m. Monday, said Tawee Kudthalaeng, police chief in the town of Nong Prue.
Investigators were able to locate the body using security camera footage from the area, Tawee said.
He did not go into details, but footage and video from cameras released by Thai media showed the white freezer in the back of a black van on the street, with a man crouching next to it.
Mack had last been seen driving his Mercedes sedan in Pattaya, a coastal city in southern Thailand, according to a missing person notice distributed by his family, which offered a reward of 3 million baht ($86,000) for information that will lead to his return.
A crowd gathered outside the house where the body was found and watched as forensic teams in white overalls, hairnets and blue gloves searched the place.
Footage broadcast by ThaiPBS showed experts inside the house looking into a garbage bag taken from a large white chest freezer. They brought out a Makita power saw with its charger, a pair of yellow-handled hedge shears, and two large rolls of plastic.
The freezer was left at the Nong Prue police station in Pattaya, Chonburi province, Thailand (AP)
The bag was taken out of the house, followed by a body covered in opaque canvas on a stretcher and the freezer chest.
Mack lived in Pattaya with his Thai wife and worked as a real estate dealer, according to local media reports. He lived in Thailand for several years.
His Mercedes E350 sedan was found in the parking lot of an apartment block in Nong Prue, an upscale area popular with foreigners northeast of Pattaya in Chonburi province on Sunday.
There was traces of what appeared to be solvent on the seats, dashboard, handlebars and other areas of the car, according to police.
A large amount of money had disappeared from Mack’s bank account, Tawee said, something police believed to be related to the crime. The police chief declined to go into details, although he said there were several suspects, both German and Thai.
The German embassy in Bangkok referred all inquiries to the German foreign ministry in Berlin, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Calls to the phone listed in the family’s notice went unanswered Tuesday.
