Russell Westbrook’s Surprise Extension: A Real Heist and NBA History-Making Salary Regression

The COVID, this is something we did not expect. But for Paul George, Russell Westbrook’s extension was a different kind of surprise. He talked regarding it in his podcast, and even called this extension at least a real heist, just like the intro of this intro.

It is true that we did not expect it either. Okay Russell Westbrook decides to stay in Los Angeles, which is a pretty logical decision given the direction the franchise wants to take. But for… $8 million over two years?! We recall that he still took 47 million last year and that it’s simply the biggest salary regression in NBA history. This did not surprise the public but also his teammates, and very recently it was Paul George himself who spoke regarding this extension in his podcast.

“Shoutout Russ. Shoutout Russ. It’s a robbery. You have Russ at minimum. It’s a heist. Russ is doing so well off the pitch that he’s not motivated by the money…I was thinking there was no way he’d come back, and he said to me, ‘I’m trying to come back, old man”. – That’s great, man. I’m happy that Russ is back, he means a lot to the team. Just with the short time he spent with us, he changed the whole culture (of the team) in such a short time. –

Paul George, face of the franchise since the summer of 2019, is therefore very happy. Be careful all the same, because the value of the latter was tested recently on the trade market. Does this statement have a subtext? Stop giving my name to every other franchise and focus on building next year’s roster with Kawhi and me? A beautiful message that would give us the possibility of having – finally – an injury-free Leonard / George duo accompanied by a nine-time All-Star point guard. In short, a nice Big 3 that might make us love next season, especially knowing Brodie’s new value for money.
