Several hypotheses that might explain this drop: “doubt regarding the usefulness of screening”, “consequence of less attractiveness”, “medical desertification”…
HEALTH – While in France, one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 (figures from the League Against Cancer, screenings for breast cancer and colorectal cancer still know low participation, below European targets.
This is what two studies published by Public health France this Tuesday, July 11. In question, the Covid pandemic which limited access to care for a few months, but not only.
Breast cancer: only one in two women are screened
From 50 to 74 years old, French women are offered a clinical breast examination and a mammogram every two years. But if the European objective of participation is at least 70%, in France, participation is around 50% according to a study published in the epidemiological bulletin of Public Health France. Declining for ten years, the Covid pandemic has weighed in this difficulty in detecting the disease but is far from being the only responsible.
According to the authors of the study, it is “Also that the underlying downward trend in screening continues”, according to them. They point to several hypotheses that might explain this trend: “doubt regarding the usefulness of screening”, “consequence of less attractiveness”, “medical desertification”…
The study specifies, however, that it is difficult to draw up a complete panorama of breast cancer screening, because some mammograms take place outside organized screenings.
32% participation for colorectal cancer screening
Second cause of cancer death in France, colorectal cancer can be detected by a test for detecting occult blood in the stool. It is offered every two years to French people aged 50 to 74. However, since the generalization of the program, it shows a low participation rate, “around 32%”. A rate once once more too low compared to European recommendations, underline the researchers behind the study.
The consultation of a general practitioner to be able to withdraw the screening kit seems to constitute ” a brake “. In 2022, new discount methods have therefore been put in place, such as the possibility of ordering your kit online or picking it up at a pharmacy.
