“It’s unbelievable” – the sea off Florida is 36.1 degrees warm

The water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest Atlantic are currently two to three degrees warmer than normal. The impact on the coral might be catastrophic.

Florida is also affected by the anomaly.

The corals off the coast are acutely endangered.

Coastal Florida towns are struggling with the effects of a record-breaking global warming the oceans. The water temperature is well over 30 degrees Celsius in many places. A buoy from the US weather agency NOAA measured 36.1 degrees on Monday evening (local time) near Johnson Key. Another buoy had recorded a temperature of almost 35 degrees near Vaca Key the day before.

Sea temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest Atlantic are two to three degrees warmer than normal, said weather forecaster Andrew Orrison of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “It’s incredible,” Orrison said. “The water is so warm that you can’t cool down.” Experts are warning of temperatures that will feel like 43 degrees on land due to humidity by the end of the week.

Coral bleaching expected

The unusual water temperatures endanger the corals off the coast. It will probably be “to do with a bad bleaching,” said the scientist Liv Williamson of the Coral Reef Futures Lab at the University of Miami the AP news agency. There is a 90 percent chance of a major bleaching on many reefs along the Pacific Islands from the equator to Florida. “It’s only July, the heat will continue to build up, and corals will be forced to cope with dangerously warm conditions for much longer than normal,” Williamson said. “We are already receiving reports of bleaching from Belize, which is very alarming this early in the summer.”

Global sea surface temperatures have been at record highs since April. According to scientists, climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon are causes of the current heat.
