AMD is recognized as one of the most innovative companies in its segment, standing out for offering exclusive features in its products, such as the 3D V-Cache architecture. In addition, the North American giant is constantly looking for new technologies that can transform the hardware market.

Last Saturday (08), the channel Gamers Nexus from YouTube published a documentary that takes us to AMD’s test labs in Texas, United States. The product that draws the most attention in the material is a unprecedented processor with vapor chamber present on integrated heatsink (IHS) for CPU cooling.

The integrated heatsink is the metal plate that sits on top of the processor and commonly includes its name, model, speed, and production location. The function of this component is to transfer the heat generated by the logic block to a larger area with better thermal conductivity, reducing the temperature of the hardware.

The steam chambers are a technique widely used in cell phones, gaming notebooks and video cards. These chambers contain a liquid—usually water—that evaporates and absorbs heat when heated. This vapor then moves to cooler areas of the chamber, condensing into liquid and carrying the absorbed heat away from the source.

AMD created a prototype integrated heatsink for its CPUs that included a vapor chamber to help distribute the heat generated by the CPU. This design would feature a porous chamber to vaporize the coolant.

According to an employee of the brand, the technology was very close to reaching the market. The expectation was that the Ryzen 7000 line processors would be the first chips in the world with a vapor chamber embedded in the IHS, but several obstacles prevented this advance in hardware heat dissipation.

The high production cost is one of the factors that discouraged the launch of the technology. In addition, the design brought little difference in temperature compared to a conventional heatsink — around just 3 ºC.
