Jakarta –
Two legends of Mandarin cinema, Tony Leung and Stephen Chow, are known as close friends since the beginning of their careers in the entertainment world. It is said that they have never worked together in a film, even though they have been in their career for decades.
This issue was later disputed because it turned out that they had been involved in a short film project. This was revealed by Tony in an interview on a television show titled ‘Stephen Chow, My Worst Good Friend, And My Best Good Friend’. This film was worked on by the director Kungfu Hustle.
In that film, Tony is one of the characters who gets beaten up by Stephen Chow, who is the main protagonist. Unfortunately, he did not mention the title of the short film and did not know what the fate of the film is now.
He also wanted to return to witness the appearance of the two of them in the early eras of his career.
“I asked him where the movie is now and he said he didn’t know. I said, ‘You don’t know? Impossible!’ He must have kept it somewhere.
Tony Leung also mentioned the reason he never appeared with Stephen Chow in a film. Because in every film that Stephen Chow has handled, he has never featured two actors as the main stars.
Not only that, Tony also tells the story of the two in the past. At that time they both registered for acting education which was held at TVB. Stephen Chow was the one who convinced him to register, unfortunately he was not accepted and only his best friend entered.
He did not give up and applied once more a few years later until he was finally accepted following being introduced by Jaime Chik or Michael Miu, famous Hong Kong actresses in the 80s.
Meanwhile, Stephen Chow had landed his first job on a children’s television program in the 1980s. Stephen Chow at that time played a vampire in the soap opera.
“He seems like a smart, sarcastic and sneaky guy even in real life,” said SCMP cultural commentator and critic Ben Sin.
In 1989, he rose to prominence with the TVB show Final Combat. The event paved the way for all of his 1990s films.
