The Puebla Group urged this Monday to guarantee and respect the electoral process in Guatemala ahead of the second round, set for August 20, amid the uncertainty created by the process of making the results official, ordered by the Superior Court Electoral.

The international entity through a statement expressed its concern regarding the current situation of the electoral process in Guatemala.

In the same way, they expressed their concern regarding the suspension of the announcement of the electoral results by the Constitutional Court.

The platform also noted that the suspension “has generated uncertainty and tensions in the country and great concern in the international community, especially in Latin America, the European Union and the United States.”

In this sense, he made a call for the organizations to act within the provisions of the legal framework and abide by the exercise of the responsibility indicated in the Magna Carta.

In the same way, he referred to the need for the ratification of the authority of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to assume the direction of the process until its completion.

The platform made up of progressive leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, expressed their support for the continuity of a legitimate and democratic process, likewise invited the International Electoral Missions present in the nation to be observers.

In this sense, the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, through the social network Twitter reiterated his call “for the second electoral round to be carried out on the date indicated by law and with posterity, with whomever is elected the election will begin.” respective transition process”
