The Mysterious Goat

On July 28, Goat will perform on the Ella Fitzgerald Stage.

Between legend and reality

In the small, remote village of Korpolombolo in northern Sweden, there is an age-old tradition of practicing voodoo worship. For generations, the priests of the village transmitted to the local population incantations, rituals and songs brought from all over the world. In order to preserve this mystical tradition, a collective, of which Goat is only the current incarnation, was born 200 or 300 years ago.

This alleged legend, told by Goatman, spokesperson for Goat, rather resembles a mask behind which hides a strong desire to remain anonymous, a mistrust of the entertainment industry and perhaps a certain animosity towards the press.

A ritual celebration

However, the tribal masks worn by the musicians are not simply a means of hiding their faces but bear witness to the decision to erase individual identities in favor of a strong collective identity. Ponchos, kaftans, djellabas, feathered headdresses and other traditional clothes reaffirm this identity and give Goat concerts the look of ritual celebrations.

Described as psych rock, Goat does not easily fit into a single box. Certainly, the penchant for experimentation and the use of all sorts of instruments is in keeping with the psychedelic ethos. However, Goat concocts his own potion with disparate ingredients: a few pinches of afrobeat, a little funk, a touch of stoner and a wide spectrum of world music. Wah-wah guitars weave ingenious riffs once morest a background of tribal percussion and fuzz bass, while shamanic chants, perfectly in unison, invoke the spirits of different cultures.
