Why Calgary Flames Players Want to Leave Alberta: The Cold Weather, Small Town, and Limited Entertainment Options

The Calgary Flames lost Johnny Gaudreau to free agency last year and traded Matthew Tkachuk following he said he wouldn’t sign a long-term contract extension with them.

Then this year, Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin and Mikael Backlund have already indicated their intentions to test the market in 2024. Tyler Toffoli, who was also going to be an unrestricted free agent next year, was traded.

But why do the players all want to leave Alberta? Milan Lucic, who also took a new avenue by returning to Boston, with the Bruins, offered an answer.

“When the teams come here, it’s usually cold,” he first said in an interview with Sportsnet. And while we all love the “Dome”, it’s old. That’s the deal.

“It’s also a small town and there’s not much there except the Flames. You can’t go see an NBA or MLB game when you’re off.

“Travel is hard…well, I’m just trying to give an honest answer regarding what the players think.”

Lucic, however, enjoyed his time in Calgary.

“I really enjoyed my time here, as did my family,” he said. It made me love hockey once more.

“The city, the fans, everything, it was wonderful. I really liked that. I also had some of the best teammates of my career [pendant mes quatre ans avec les Flames].»
