Marcel Hug wins the 5000 m at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris. No other athlete has ever been faster than the Swiss over this distance at a World Championship. A Swiss woman also triumphs in the women’s category: Catherine Debrunner also wins gold over 5000 m .The Thurgau native prevails with a lead of 27 hundredths over compatriot Manuela Schär.

Marcel Hug confidently triumphed over the 5000 meter distance at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris. The 37-year-old Swiss took the lead from the start and crowned his impressive performance by winning the title. It was his eleventh gold medal at world championships.

Behind Hug, Thailand’s Prawat Wahoram and Briton Daniel Sidbury completed the podium. However, both athletes might not keep up with Hug’s new world championship time of 9:35.78 minutes and finished 40 seconds behind. However, the final sprint between Wahoram and Sidbury was extremely close. In the end, Wahoram, 42, had a slender one-tenth lead over Sidbury.

Successful Swiss Day

The women had reason to celebrate too. In a very close race at the front, Catherine Debrunner crossed the finish line first at the Stade Charléty in Paris. “I was very nervous at the start and I’m really happy that it worked out so well,” said Debrunner following her triumph.

The 28-year-old delivered a gripping finish with Manuela Schär and the American Susannah Scaroni. Debrunner’s compatriot Schär finished second, 27 hundredths behind, Scaroni secured the bronze medal almost 2 seconds behind the winning time.

Patricia Eachus, the 3rd Swiss at the start over the 5000 m, finished the race in 7th and second from last place. The 33-year-old mightn’t keep up with all the speed increases in the field.

Duo is used to success

For Debrunner it is already the second world championship gold medal. 4 years ago when she triumphed over 400 meters in Dubai, she was still a specialist for short distances, now she even wins marathons. The time of 11:07.22 minutes for the 28-year-old from Thurgau was a world championship record.

For Schär it was already the 9th World Championship medal. The 38-year-old from Lucerne was still missing from the 2019 title fights in Doha, because the World Championships exceptionally didn’t take place until November and this didn’t fit into Schär’s schedule.
